The AUTOBIOGRAPHS series draws from Lippke’s hippie childhood, which was spent living in vans, tents and a converted school bus in the forests of Colorado and Washington State. With few photographs documenting his early life, Lippke has set about recreating formative memories from this time using friends, family members and hired actors in elaborately staged tableaux. The resulting photographs operate as near mythic reconstructions that extend beyond personal history and engage the broader tradition of ancestral storytelling in which memory is transmitted, revised and reimagined over time.
